Current Volunteer Opportunities

The Salvation Army of Johnson City offers several volunteer opportunities year-round. If you are interested in volunteering, please call (423-926-2101) or email the volunteer coordinator (the email form is at the bottom of this page) for more information or stop by the office for an application. All volunteers must fill out an application and receive a volunteer card before they can volunteer. We can easily accommodate large groups, as well as college students.

The Center of Hope: Volunteers at the Center of Hope can help serve meals twice daily, seven days a week. Lunch begins at 11:30 AM and dinner begins at 4:30 PM. Sunday lunch is held from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM.

The Family Thrift Store: Volunteers at our family thrift store help clean and tidy both the store and the merchandise. Volunteers are able to work any time during store hours: Monday-Saturday from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM.

Flowers of Hope: The Flowers of Hope is a program run in cooperation with the Shady Oaks Garden Club. Twice a week we collect donated flowers past their sell-by dates and create bouquets for the Center of Hope, as well as several community agencies, hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement communities. Flowers of Hope meets twice weekly in the Center of Hope, on Tuesdays and Fridays and begins at 1:00 PM.

Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities

Angel Tree Registration: Every year, volunteers at The Salvation Army help low income families sign their children up for the Angel Tree Christmas program. Registration is typically held in early October from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Angel Tree Adoptions: In mid-November, we begin our Angel Tree adoptions at various locations in the area. We typically have volunteers at the Mall at Johnson City to help mall-goers pick out Angels, record their information, and receive donated gifts.

Angel Tree Distribution: After the Angel gifts are returned before Christmas, volunteers help The Salvation Army distribute gift and food boxes to the families. This typically happens in mid-December.

Bell-Ringing and Red Kettles: Every year, during the Christmas season, The Salvation Army bell-ringers set up outside of shopping locations to collect donations from the community. Volunteers are the difference between an empty kettle and one that raises about $30 per hour – enough to provide a family with two bags of groceries or shelter an individual for a night. Those wishing to volunteer as bell-ringers can sign up at http://www.registertoring.com.
